Windows update will not run reporting the service is not running. However checking services in administrative tools reports windows update and BITS are running and set to automatic start. The first time it found and “fixed” 2 problems. Problems installing recent updates and 2. Service registration is missing or corrupt. Windows update still did not work. The second time it found the same 2 problems but fixed only the service registration error. Windows update still does not work. There are no later entries in the file.

I have tried system restore but it reported failure indicating system files were not changed. It did undo some sofware and windows updates though. When the problem first started it was after a blue screen crash during a Firefox update which failed to complete properly, and also immediately after shutting down the updated Firefox.

System restore did return Firefox to the previous version. There have been no further blue screen crashes but windows explorer has occasionally stopped working and restarted. Internet Explorer is also failing to display some website windows which will display in Firefox.

Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. You could reset Windows Update. But be aware that it will result in the loss of the history list in updates. Type the following in the black box:. Tip: Instead of typing each line, you can select the text in the line above by high-lighting it, right-click, choose Copy from the pop-up menu.

When you try the window hangs. Task manager indicates windows update is running but nothing ever shows in the window. When you try immediately after rebooting the laptop, the update window opens but if you select check for updates it reports that the update service is not running.

Checking services shows it is running. Selecting change the setting hangs the window and again task manager reports that windows update is running. These hung windows can only be closed by end task in task manager. The window also hangs if you select update history. I will at some point try the update service reset without changing to never check, but the system has other problems that started at the same time, namely explorer crashing and restarting periodically and internet explorer not opening some web pages properly including outlook.

David, first consider the possibility of installing a new hard drive. If your laptop is around 5 years or older, definitely do. Hard drives are not that expensive and pretty easy to physically install. If the disk I suspect more than one is involved you made when it was new is a proper restore disk and it probably is, you are in clover.

You should not need any other disk or even have to go through activation. It is relatively easy, quick and complete, but please follow the instructions I am about to give you exactly as described. It is the procedure I use for my clients computers. After Windows 7, system drivers and all updates are installed and any stable applications like Microsoft Office are installed and updated, and before any data or dynamic applications are installed such as antivirus software, create a system image.

When you are done you will have a very nice bit of insurance. Should you ever again need to re-build a corrupted system or replace a hard drive, you will have a precise duplicate of your system as it was at this point. You can restore that image to a hard drive in about 20 minutes. Another great feature about using the image is that you do not need an install disk or a product key to do the re-install the next time, and you will have saved yourself all the time you put in this time.

NOW, you can begin to install your programs, and not before this point. Today I decided to tackle the problem. After a major internet search I discovered that the file authcab expired on Dec 3 which just happened to be when my problems started.

I noticed that some people had successfully restarted update by changing the system date to before Dec 3 So I changed the date, rebooted the machine and windows update opened.

I checked for updates and it found 9. Windows update successfully installed updates, and on reboot is still working. I can access the update history and change update settings.
