I now download and install Window Updates for my PC’s manually to save money and to prevent installation difficulties. My problem is now with the Update notification it continues to advise that the update which I installed is ready to be downloaded.

Yet I can see it was successfully installed when I check the Update History. So my question is how do I clear the notification. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. The entry shows four times in the Update History. Anyway the PC has been shut down and started numerous times over that period. If I close Windows Update nothing much seems to happen, if I click on the notification well it would start to download which I don’t want.

Yes I have a fair number of software installed, but for me it is more about saving bandwidth, I’m on a metered connection and I would like to keep the costs down. Well I’ve always been on a metered connection but recently we have been chewing up the bandwidth so by downloading updates once and then installing manually on the other PC I am halving the costs.

When you’re looking at close to a gig or more for the bigger updates, it’s worth doing. We appreciate the information that you have given about having a metered connection.

Being on a metered connection means that some updates for Windows will not be installed automatically, unless downloaded and installed manually. However, your PC may not have recognized that the said update was already installed, causing it to notify you to install the update. May we know if you have restarted your device after installing the update? Regarding the notifications, you can change the settings of notifications in Windows You can follow the steps here on this link on how to change notifications in Windows Thanks for getting back to me.

I can’t say I have restarted my PC but certainly switched it on and off over several days. When I talk about the notification I mean the one in the Windows Update window. The one which you click on to begin the download. Having successfully installed an update I can see it in the update history I find that Windows Update still wants to download and install the same update. I have for the time being paused the downloads in the hope that it will reset itself after a few days.

I was looking through the update history and before the four failed attempts to install the Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version for xbased Systems KB update, 5 days earlier it was installed successfully. This Windows Update did automatically. I don’t know if this helps but I thought I’d mention it. By the way I realize now that when you were asking about restarting the PC’s you were talking about straight after the installation and yes of course I do that.

This is a recurring theme. Naturally as Windows update is confused about the status of these updates I can no longer use pause to stop it from burning up my bandwidth. I have to admit to feeling frustrated. I hung onto Vista SP2 until security updates were no longer available. Then went straight to Windows 10 and have had nothing but problems since.

It would be nice if the good people at Microsoft could do something to make Windows Update less flakey. It’s costing me an arm and a leg with downloads but if I’m experiencing trouble so are others and that can’t be good for Microsoft either.
